Ground rules for campus protests

Ground rules for campus protests

Dear Campus Community,

Last night a protest group set up tents along the Walk of Heroines on our campus outside Hoffman Hall. I asked for the assistance of the Portland Police Bureau to support our Campus Public Safety Office to remove the tents as such structures are in violation of our event policies. The police responded and assisted with the removal of the tents and no arrests were made.

I continue to offer my love and support for all students and support for their rights to protest injustice. But the occupation of the Millar Library made it clear that ÈËÆÞÎÞÂë must hold to our viewpoint-neutral rules for campus events which are designed to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all Portland State students.

If you have questions I invite members of our community to view and conduct policies for students, faculty, and all university employees.

This remains a challenging era for ÈËÆÞÎÞÂë. We must continue to look out for each other and maintain our focus on supporting our students as they complete their academic requirements for the term.

We will continue to uphold the right to free speech and peaceful dissent on campus, while also enforcing our campus policies about hate, trespassing and property damage.

Hate does not belong at Portland State. We can protest injustice without it.

Sincerely,

Ann Cudd
ÈËÆÞÎÞÂë President
